Have you ever thought how training for and then running a MARATHON teaches many lessons directly relevant to the business world? Probably not because only about 0.1% of the global population has ever run a marathon.

Here are ten similarities between marathons and business that I observed after running my first marathon. They are applicable to teams and/or individuals. Maybe you have other "lessons learned" from achieving a big goal:

1. Setting a major GOAL is fundamental to achieving big results

2. Achieving a big goal requires a PLAN

3. You have to FOLLOW the plan

4. Know that PROGRESS is incremental to tackle big goals

5. Positive ATTITUDE is important to maintain focus along the way

6. Be FLEXIBLE to overcome unexpected obstacles

7. CELEBRATE small milestones that help you achieve the big goal

8. Track and be HONEST about your results

9. It's not easy, but with hard work and following your plan in a consistent manner it's POSSIBLE to achieve your big goal

10. Success is ephemeral so start thinking about your next big GOAL
