Does your organization have a Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG)?

A great BHAG typically has a longer-term horizon, like 5 years, with one major clearly stated stretch objective. For example, be the #1 or #2 provider in your specific industry.

A viable BHAG must be formulated based on feedback from all stakeholders. Once agreed the C-Suite should communicate the BHAG to the organization and then periodically reference it so it doesn’t go stale.

Most companies tend to just focus on the current year’s targets.  Setting a BHAG, and keeping it in front of mind, will help organizations think and act beyond current monthly or quarterly numbers.

BHAGs can also be used on a personal basis.  Although the time frame doesn’t need to be as long as an organization.  Six or twelve months is a good timeframe to achieve a major personal BHAG. My personal BHAG for the next year is to train for and run the February 2026 marathon in Kyoto, Japan. What is yours?
